The True Spirit of Navratri – Fasting of the Mind


Navratri is not merely a time of external fasting; it is a sacred period to journey within and awaken the hidden energy of the soul. While many observe fasting of the body, the deeper essence of Navratri is to fast the mind — to release distractions, negativity, and restlessness, so we may experience our inner divinity.


True Navratri is the fasting of thoughts and the feasting of divine feelings. By cultivating nine sacred feelings within, we align with the nine forms of Devi and the universal feminine energy that nurtures all life.



The Nine Divine Feelings of Navratri

1. Breath – Awareness of prana, the life-force, grounding us in the present moment.

2. Compassion – The heart’s natural flow of kindness towards all beings.

3. Silence – Inner stillness that allows us to listen to the soul’s wisdom.

4. Forgiveness – Releasing burdens of the past and freeing ourselves and others.

5. Courage – Invoking Shakti to face challenges with strength and faith.

6. Anand (Bliss) – Experiencing the joy that is the true nature of the soul.

7. Sathya (Truth) – Living in harmony with eternal dharma and authenticity.

8. Surrender – Letting go of ego and trusting the divine flow of life.

9. Freedom – Liberation from fears, attachments, and limitations of the mind.



The Essence of Navratri


Navratri is thus not about restraining the body alone, but about purifying the mind to awaken the soul’s higher nature. By fasting from negativity and cultivating these nine divine feelings, we allow the Goddess within to rise, transforming our lives into a sacred offering.
